With the growing number of pharmacological agents on the market, pharmacists, physicians, physician assistants, nurses, other health professionals and students in health care are finding it increasingly difficult to provide colleagues and patients with types of targeted information for patients need.
The aim of this book is to provide the essential data in an easy to use, readily available, concise and easily transportable format. The chapters are organized by therapeutic class and, in many cases, are divided into separate tables for convenience of the reader. The tables that follow a specific format throughout the text.
Following these chapters are appendices of useful information to health professionals and students, and medical and pharmaceutical abbreviations and reference ranges for common laboratory tests. Attached, as well as diagrams and text are appropriate for the counseling sessions that illustrate the patient and / or describe the proper technique for administering drugs via various routes. Moreover, given the wide use of Spanish in the United States, an appendix provides translations from English to Spanish for commonly used medical / pharmaceutical words and phrases.
To use this manual, the reader should first consult the index, which indicates a specific page / table in the text, where the drug is listed. In situations where a product has more of a statement, full details of the products are generally provided in one chapter or table, but are cross-references. The tables are designed to provide the reader the opportunity to read about a specific agent or to examine a group of products used for the same or a similar condition.
In individual tables, prescription drugs most commonly available in the United States are listed alphabetically by generic name. The tables also provide many of the most common trade or brand names for these products, the usual doses for adults (FDA approved for indications as outlined in the SPC [PI]), contraindications, adverse effects more common, and other considerations such as warnings and precautions that need to be put in perspective when evaluating an individual patient, and essential information that should be discussed with a patient during counseling sessions.
