The novel opens with a description of the Dursley family, a middle class family in small quibble, Surrey. Vernon and Petunia Dursley is constantly afraid that someone will find out about her sister, Petunia certainly "unDursleyish" witch, Lily, and their concerns were justified, when the son of Lily's baby, Harry remains on the doorstep. Lily and her husband, James Potter, of the dark wizard Voldemort slain him, but Harry when Voldemort tried to murder his power somehow broke. Harry is the only living person to survive the killing curse, and the only sign of his encounter with Voldemort is a unique lightning bolt-shaped scar on his forehead. Because Harry is no other family that Albus Dumbledore, head of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and sorcery, decided to leave the Dursleys until he is old enough to attend Hogwarts.
After ten years, Harry has grown into a boy pale, thin with black hair that stays in place and bright green eyes. From childhood, Harry is told that his parents were killed in a car accident, but no other information about them, not even a photo. Harry's cousin Dudley dominated the family, Harry bully and his gang of friends and rotten damaged by Uncle Vernon and Aunt Petunia. While Dudley has two bedrooms - one for his bed and broke all his toys - Harry is in exile in the small closet under the stairs. While he tries to avoid attracting attention, Harry could not deny that strange things often happened around him. When Aunt Petunia, cut his hair in a fit of frustration, and it grew back to its original length in time for school the next day. Another time Harry is chased by Dudley and the gang suddenly finds himself on the roof of the kitchen.

Harry discovers that the Dursleys are always aware of his magical powers, but tried to suppress them and also make it "normal". Robbing learn the truth about his parents murdered by Voldemort.
