She was born Daphne Hardy in 1917 in Amersham, Buckinghamshire and Big Clive Hardy, a diplomat and his wife Judith. Between 1923 and 1931, she was educated in The Hague and in the French and German schools. She left school aged 14 to private study in Holland for a year with Marian and Albert Termote-Gobius. From 1934-1937 she received the Royal Academy Schools in London attended. In 1937 she was awarded a gold medal and traveling scholarship in 1938 in France and Italy. In the summer of 1939 in Paris, through mutual friends she met the Hungarian writer Arthur Koestler and they close. Her life before and after the outbreak of the Second World War are described in Koestler's autobiography lime which it appears as "G". With the outbreak of war in 1939 was anti-communist translation of the English manuscript Koestler that it was written in German.
