World of Microbiology and Immunology - 2 Volume Set
Publisher: Gacl | ISBN: 0787665401 | edition 2002 | PDF | 701 pages | 12,63 mb
Microbiology and immunology are sometimes seen as esoteric and highly specialized, with some interpreters of science to students and the public. The authors have selected 600 entries that highlight selected important persons, research centers, the terms and concepts of these two fields. There is a brief biography of the well known (Salk, Jonas) and the lesser known but important (Stein Mil, Cesar), and explanations of common terms (epidemics and pandemics), infrequent terms (retroposons and transposable elements), and acronyms such as AIDS and SCID (severe combined immunodeficiency).
The entries are in alphabetical order with many cross references. Although no bibliographies with the entries, there are 13 pages of the book and journal-article citations and 10 pages of Web addresses in the "Sources" section. This is followed by a 18-page "Historical Chronology" of the milestones in human scientific achievement, showing how ancient (circa 10,000 BC) ideas led to the germ theory and the blossoming of microbiology and immunology and 2002. The extensive, detailed general index indicates the volume of the main entrances and the page numbers in bold. Sometimes the same information is repeated in regular type, an unnecessary redundancy. Using the index may find that the Irish famine is mentioned in the entry of fungal genetics along with similar passages integrated information. An important, but missing, help finding an index of biographies, including biographies of navigation is often a way to interest students in a discipline.
