Description:
The grapes of wrath are one of those classic Steinbeck novels that we all need a moment to read. I'm sure it must have been given to me at some point in my years of high school, but until this week, I will never read it. Honestly, this probably would have remained unread by me forever if I did not "ashamed" to read it with my older brother.
How can someone "shame" that you read something, you ask? Well, it's simple, really. Grapes of wrath is the story of my people, this is the story of my family heritage. No, my last name Joad and I am fully aware that Steinbeck's novel is a work of fiction, but it is a work of fiction that is well researched historical accuracy to give this topic. In short, the grapes of wrath are the people and as a native of Oklahoma Sooner State, I come from a long line of Oklahomans ... "Okies," if you want.
For those of you who read this book, you may find interesting - perhaps even more alarming - that have chosen to refer to themselves as' rule. "After all, Steinbeck uses the term as a derogatory description of the measures to be homeless. It is used in the same context hatred that many similar words were used at all times for people of color, or families of Italy to Mexico ... break and humiliate ... Ireland ... Poland ... American Indian. Each time their names in their derogatory to their people, "rule" was the word hateful Oklahomans immigrants use during 1930 to portray. But I I am proud name. I'm proud because for me the word "rule", kindness, selflessness, determination and resilience, and I feel that Steinbeck did a beautiful job that Joad family properties in Oklahoma.

For those of you who are not reading the grapes of wrath is an epic novel that describe the mass migration of Oklahomans (and its neighboring states) in California during the Great Depression of 1930 and simultaneous dust Bowl of Oklahoma. It was a time when overuse of land, once fertile agricultural land in the state that makes it unsuitable for agriculture. With no money coming from the crops, and attacked banks called in loans to the ground, and forced tenant farmers and their families from homes they have known for generations. The result was a mass of homeless people led to a great migration to California in search of work.
My father was during this period in 1931 was born, and when he was four, his father died and his mother a widow with almost a dozen children to support on her own. Like many, his family's farm and had lost to seek new opportunities for its large family to support. Perhaps due to lack of funds, it does not appear in the West for better opportunities. Instead, his strange work, and her older children to work, promoting her new children to other family members and friends in order to survive. Her adult stepchildren and their spouses, however, follow the migration to California, where that branch of our family (California band ") to their deaths their descendants -. My 1st cousins and their families - still live there. So if I say the grapes of wrath is the story of my family, it is not much of an exaggeration, perhaps because of it, I loved every word of this story.
When I mentioned the other readers who've read the grapes of wrath, I have a very negative reaction. Most people said they were depressed or sad or "a real downer." To be honest, this is not what I had in the book. I found a book of hope and a testimony to the strength of the human spirit. Yes, it was hard to read about the hundreds of thousands of hungry immigrants, and it was difficult to come up with the fact that "this really happened!" But I really got the story was a lesson in discrimination and racism, and hope for the future of humanity. You see, even when they are all take and no real hope in the near future, okies refused to simply lie down and die. They refused to allow "big man" their best take. They stumbled through the death of hope, hunger and despair. They did their best to keep their families together, and they never fail to find a helping hand to give to a need which was greater than theirs. Nearly 100 years later, most Oklahomans are still excellent quality ones.
